Detailed Description:
The Deputy Director of Athletics/Chief Operating Officer for Athletics will oversee the day to day activities of the athletic department, and will serve in place of the Executive Director of Athletics as needed. They will provide leadership over athletic department staff and provide assistance to the Executive Director of Athletics in all aspects related to the department as a whole. In addition, they will work with various sports and units as assigned by the Athletic Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning and Leadership
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director of Athletics to develop and implement strategic plans to advance the department's mission and goals.
  • Serve in place of the Executive Director of Athletics at various events as directed
  • Determine strategies to adapt to industry standards and changes, under the guidance of the Executive Director of Athletics
  • Provide leadership and guidance to departmental staff, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability.

Operational Oversight
  • Directly manage key operational areas within the athletics department, mainly focused on internal departments as defined by the Executive Director of Athletics. These areas will include Academic Support, Student-Athlete Development, Compliance, Sports Medicine and Strength & Conditioning.
  • Implement policies and procedures to optimize operational efficiency and enhance the overall experience for student-athletes, coaches, and fans
  • Contribute to various fundraising and sponsorship initiatives related to revenue generation

Sport Supervision
  • Serve as the sport supervisor for various sports; as assigned by the Executive Director of Athletics .
  • Work directly with head coaches and staff on budget/fiscal responsibility, roster management, scheduling, problem solving, Student-Athlete issues, and with support staff from all areas of the department who support the assigned sports.

Compliance and Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations.
  • Identify and mitigate operational risks, implementing appropriate controls and protocols as necessary.

Interdepartmental and Campus Collaboration
  • Foster strong relationships with other departments across the institution, promoting collaboration and alignment of goals.
  • Serve as a liaison between the athletics department and other administrative units, facilitating communication and cooperation on shared initiatives.
  • Engage and interact with various Student-Athlete groups as necessary to ensure the Student-Athlete voice is a component of strategic planning and campus collaboration

External Relations
  • Represent the athletics department at institutional events, community engagements, and external meetings as needed.
  • Cultivate relationships with donors, sponsors, and other external stakeholders to support the department's fundraising and revenue-generation efforts.

  • Willingness to travel and be away from home for extended periods of time during tournament events and fundraising opportunities.
  • CPR/first aid certification required within six weeks of employment.
  • California driver's license required within six weeks of employment.

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes.


Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required in Sports Management, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of athletics specific experience in athletics administration, with a demonstrated track record of success in leadership roles.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Thorough understanding of NCAA rules and regulations, with a commitment to compliance and ethical conduct.
  • Proven ability to think strategically, solve complex problems, and drive organizational change.
  • A collaborative and inclusive leadership style, with a commitment to fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to think outside the box with the intention of being strategic as related for adapting to industry change.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree preferred.

Performance Expectations - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to initiate, coordinate, oversee and complete various projects independently.
  • Must possess strong organizational techniques.
  • Possess excellent human relations skills: ability to work with various University constituents including parents, students, employees, trustees, donors and University benefactors; conflict resolution, decision-making and implementation skills.
  • Ability to navigate and adapt to industry change and challenges; strategically plan for future structural changes within the department
  • Ability to communicate goals and implement departmental objectives in collaboration with all key constituents.
  • Strong background and experience in a leadership/supervisory role; ability to supervise a large number of individuals who have varying levels of responsibility.
  • Thorough knowledge of budgetary procedures, including long-range planning and fiscal management for a multitude of accounts with differing priorities.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond to situations in a positive, solution oriented manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students and donors as required by University policy and the Buckley Amendment.
  • Ability to use tools and equipment listed below.
  • Willingness to accept and promote the values and mission of the University of San Diego.
  • Understanding of NCAA and conference rules and regulations

$14,558-$16,985 per month; Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
